22 October 2019 Runners for the Hubrecht Institute and cancer research Back to news On the 20th of October, runners from the Hubrecht Institute took part in two runs: the Maliebaanloop in Utrecht and the marathon in Amsterdam. They ran to raise awareness for the research done at the Hubrecht Institute and to raise funds for the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF). The Foundation Friends of the Hubrecht Institute sponsored our Maliebaanloop-runners, while our participants in the Amsterdam half marathon ran together in the “For Science, Together Against Cancer” team sponsored by Single Cell Discoveries, a Hubrecht Institute spin-off company, and Oncode Institute. Maliebaanloop Fourteen people ran for the Hubrecht Institute in the 6 and 10km runs of the Maliebaanloop in Utrecht. Together they ran 116 km at an overall average speed of 11.03km/hour. Bram Verhagen was the fastest participant for the Hubrecht Institute team, running 10 km in only 34 minutes and 53 seconds! The Foundation Friends of the Hubrecht Institute supported our team with team t-shirts and a team training. After the run, the team had some well-deserved celebratory drinks and food together at a café in Utrecht. Amsterdam Marathon On the same day the Amsterdam Marathon took place. Employees and supporters of the Hubrecht Institute, Single Cell Discoveries and Oncode Institute ran together in the “For Science, Together Against Cancer” team to raise funds for the Dutch Cancer Society. Some of the participants joined the 8km run, while others took part in the half marathon. Together, the 16 participants ran 232km. Since they managed to raise nearly 2000 euros with just a small group of people, plans are to organize a larger team running event next spring.
