Hubrecht Institute now generates its own energy with 325 solar panels

Back to news

The Hubrecht Institute recently started generating part of its own electricity with the help of 325 brand-new solar panels installed on the institute’s rooftop. The panels face east, south, and west, enabling them to capture sunlight throughout the day for maximum efficiency.

This sustainable investment aligns with the Hubrecht Institute’s ambition to operate in a more environmentally conscious manner and to become partially self-sufficient in its energy consumption. Since their installation in February, the panels have already generated 22 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity – the equivalent of over 132,000 kilometers driven in an electric car. The electricity is used directly within the institute.

The completion of the installation was celebrated with both directors, the sustainability officer, the manager facilities, colleagues from technical services, the real estate manager from the KNAW, and the team from ZonSimpel, who carried out the installation.

With this investment in renewable energy, the Hubrecht Institute contributes to a greener future for both science and society.
